The Role of Technology in Social Studies Education in 21st Century

When I was in high school, I was so sure of becoming an accountant. I wanted to work in banks and also to be a lawyer. I want to fight for the people who can't fight for themselves. But because of technology, I ended up as a social studies major. 

Technology has a big role in this generation and so as in me. Way back pandemic, when there is no chance to travel and socialize because of lockdowns, my only way to cope with stress is to scroll on social media. We know that there so much pirated movies that can be found throughout the internet and that time, I watched the movie of Heneral Luna and the El Presidente. These two movies awakened my nationalism and those teacher that makes history an interesting subject was the reason I chose this major as my specialization. 

Starting a journey as a Social Studies major means diving into the rich history of human civilization. This interdisciplinary field encompasses a wide array of subjects, including history, geography, political science, economics, sociology, anthropology, and psychology. In studying Social Studies, students gain a comprehensive understanding of how societies function, interact, and evolve over time.The primary goal of a Social Studies major is to foster civic competence—the knowledge, intellectual processes, and democratic dispositions required for active and engaged participation in public life. This major equips students with critical thinking skills, a deep appreciation for cultural diversity, and the ability to make informed decisions for the public good in an increasingly interconnected world.

By choosing to major in Social Studies, you are committing to a path of lifelong learning and civic engagement. You will be equipped to contribute thoughtfully and effectively to the ever-evolving global community.

In 21st century, technology and social media can help us more to introduce the importance of studying social studies in our society. And here are my three (3) favorite websites that really helped me learn social studies course as meaningful interesting subject and help me create my assignments.

1. Crash Course 
This channel is my favorite source of information when it comes in Geography, it also tackles different specialization. From the word it self, crash course is a class in which a lot of information is taught in a short period of time. I assure you guys, you will fall in love in social studies if you watch the videos of crash course.

An online design and visual communication platform with a mission to empower everyone in the world to design anything and publish anywhere. Canva makes classroom design thinking and enhancing lesson plans to refining educational materials and fostering meaningful engagement in the classroom. And for Social Studies lesson, it's a big help to us because it has features and elements that will make your presentation interesting.


3. Britannica 
Britannica is one of my trusted and favorite online encyclopedia because it has a good table of contents that help us to look for the informations we need wether it be history, culture or other information. And it is the longest-running in-print encyclopaedia in the English language.

Social Studies Education has always been crucial in shaping students understanding of the world. And in 21st-century, we must not think that technology has a lot more cons for academics instead we need to look on the brighter side that it makes more interactive, engaging, and relevant in today's students. By using digital tools and websites, educators are preparing students to become more informed. As technology continues to evolve, the potential of transforming students are boundless, opening an even more innovative and effective ways to understand and live with the society.
